PROPERTIES OF ACID AND BASED

Properties of Acids
  1. taste sour (don't taste them!)... the word 'acid' comes from the Latin acere, which means 'sour'
  2. acids change litmus (a blue vegetable dye) from blue to red
  3. their aqueous (water) solutions conduct electric current (are electrolytes)
  4. react with bases to form salts and water
  5. evolve hydrogen gas (H2) upon reaction with an active metal (such as alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, zinc, aluminum)
Properties of Bases
  1. taste bitter (don't taste them!)
  2. feel slippery or soapy (don't arbitrarily touch them!)
  3. bases don't change the color of litmus; they can turn red (acidified) litmus back to blue
  4. their aqueous (water) solutions conduct and electric current (are electrolytes)
  5. react with acids to form salts and water
Examples of Common Acids
  1. citric acid (from certain fruits and veggies, notably citrus fruits)
  2. ascorbic acid (vitamin C, as from certain fruits)
  3. vinegar (5% acetic acid)
  4. carbonic acid (for carbonation of soft drinks)
  5. lactic acid (in buttermilk)
 Examples of Common Bases
  1. detergents
  2. soap
  3. lye (NaOH)
  4. household ammonia (aqueous)
